Oakley under 13's were very unlucky in being defeated by Old Basing tonight in a tight match at Dummer.
Batting first Oakley took advantage of a lot of wides to start compiling a decent score, though runs were slow to come of the bat as Ben Farragher was unluckily run out, and Aaron Brown was bowled by a cracking delivery. Duncan Van Dyk batted stoically and some good shots were not rewarded with runs and he was eventually well caught for 3. Brad Coates (19) and George Lethaby (14 Not Out) put up a good stand to bolster the score to a competitive 113.
Defending the total, Oakley started well with excellent early spells of bowling from Aaron Brown and James Lancaster, but thereafter a mixture of bad fortune, silly mistakes, and wayward bowling allowed Basing back in the match. A late spell of tight bowling by Duncan Van Dyke enabled George Lethaby to take a solid catch and allow Oakley the chance to win, but a couple of umpiring decisions on run outs went the way of Old basing and Oakley's efforts were eventually in vain, though the performance from all the boys gives huge encouragement.
